Microsoft’s grand plan to eliminate phone numbers by ZDNet's Mary Jo Foley -- I've been puzzling over transcripts of a couple of recent speeches by Microsoft Chairman Bill Gates where he discussed his vision for the end of phone numbers. But it wasn't until today, when I learned more about Microsoft's "Echoes" services platform for telcos that I began piecing together how Gates & Co. thinks Microsoft can do this.

Building the Zero-Emissions City
Electronic chauffer: Driverless transports will provide door-to-door service for occupants of a new city being built in Abu Dhabi (top). A typical street will be sheltered from most direct sunlight. Solar panels overhead and built into the walls of buildings will provide power.
Last week, in the harsh desert climate of Abu Dhabi, construction started on a city that will house 50,000 people and 1,500 businesses but use extremely little energy, and what it does use will come from renewable sources. The initial building is a new research institute that the founders hope will be the seed for the equivalent of a Silicon Valley of the Middle East, only one centered not on information technology but on renewable energy.
The city, which is expected to cost $22 billion, will implement an array of technologies, including thin-film solar panels that serve as the facades and roofing materials for buildings, ubiquitous sensors for monitoring energy use, and driverless vehicles powered by batteries that make cars unnecessary. Indeed, the city's founders hope that it will serve as a test bed for a myriad of new technologies being proposed to reduce greenhouse-gas emissions.
The new zero-emissions city, which is being built near the city of Abu Dhabi in the center of the United Arab Emirates (UAE), is part of the Masdar Initiative, a $15 billion government-funded investment program designed in part to ensure that the UAE's prosperity won't be linked exclusively to its oil. Its leaders say that the project will give the country a leadership position in renewable energy. If it's successful, says Sultan al Jaber, Masdar's CEO, "we'll be sitting on top of the world."

Philips 3D – the next revolution in TV viewing
We live in a 3D world, but our television screens still display a flat, 2D image. Now, with Philips’ 3D WOWvx displays, viewers can experience 3D television without the use of special glasses. By adding depth to the picture, these 3D displays give an astonishing, immersive viewing experience, as the images seem to come out of the screen.
At Philips Research, we are passionately involved in making this experience even more worthwhile. In the long history of television, many new ‘dimensions’ have been added to the viewing experience. Black-and-white was replaced by color, mono sound was superseded by stereo and – later on – surround sound, and with AmbiLight, Philips created an even more immersive viewing experience. However, despite all these new ‘dimensions’, we are still looking at a flat, 2D image on a screen.
Now, with our Philips 3D displays, you can experience 3D television without the use of special glasses.
From 2D to 3D television – the roadmapAt present, our 3D displays – that can easily switch between 2D and 3D mode – are used for professional applications, such as in-store advertising, where 3D certainly adds a ‘wow!’ factor. At Philips Research, we are exploring opportunities to bring 3D TV also into the broader consumer domain over the years to come. The availability of 3D content is of key importance. Therefore, we are developing tools for automated conversion of 2D content into 3D, and for dedicated creation of 3D content. Furthermore, we are partnering with industrial and academic players in a European consortium to further develop a broadcast format for 3D television.
All in all, the basic requirements are being met to bring a new, exciting viewing experience to mass consumer markets. 3D is here now and may soon revolutionize TV viewing in the home.

bioWAVE Ocean power system
The wave power system, bioWAVE™, is based on the swaying motion of sea plants in the presence of ocean waves.
The hydrodynamic interaction of the buoyant blades with the oscillating flow field is designed for maximum energy absorption. In extreme wave conditions the bioWAVE™ automatically ceases operating and assumes a safe position lying flat against the seabed. This eliminates exposure to extreme forces, allowing for lighter designs and substantial cost savings.
Systems are being developed for 250kW, 500kW, 1000kW capacities to match conditions in various locations.

In totaal ongeveer 19 km.
