Microchips Everywhere: a Future Vision

Here's a vision of the not-so-distant future:
Microchips with antennas will be embedded in virtually everything you buy, wear, drive and read, allowing retailers and law enforcement to track consumer items and, by extension, consumers wherever they go, from a distance.
A seamless, global network of electronic "sniffers" will scan radio tags in myriad public settings, identifying people and their tastes instantly so that customized ads, "live spam," may be beamed at them.
In "Smart Homes," sensors built into walls, floors and appliances will inventory possessions, record eating habits, monitor medicine cabinets all the while, silently reporting data to marketers eager for a peek into the occupants' private lives.
Science fiction?
In truth, much of the radio frequency identification technology that enables objects and people to be tagged and tracked wirelessly already exists and new and potentially intrusive uses of it are being patented, perfected and deployed.
Some of the world's largest corporations are vested in the success of RFID technology, which couples highly miniaturized computers with radio antennas to broadcast information about sales and buyers to company databases.
Already, microchips are turning up in some computer printers, car keys and tires, on shampoo bottles and department store clothing tags. They're also in library books and "contactless" payment cards.
Companies say the RFID tags improve supply-chain efficiency, cut theft, and guarantee that brand-name products are authentic, not counterfeit. At a store, RFID doorways could scan your purchases automatically as you leave, eliminating tedious checkouts.
At home, convenience is a selling point: RFID-enabled refrigerators could warn about expired milk, generate weekly shopping lists, even send signals to your interactive TV, so that you see "personalized" commercials for foods you have a history of buying. Sniffers in your microwave might read a chip-equipped TV dinner and cook it without instruction.

Looking into the Brain with Light

An Israeli company is working on a new device to monitor oxygen levels in the brain.
A new noninvasive diagnostic technology could give doctors the single most important sign of brain health: oxygen saturation. Made by an Israeli company called OrNim and slated for trials on patients in U.S. hospitals later this year, the technology, called targeted oximetry, could do what standard pulse oximeters can't.
A standard pulse oximeter is clipped onto a finger or an earlobe to measure oxygen levels under the skin. It works by transmitting a beam of light through blood vessels in order to measure the absorption of light by oxygenated and deoxygenated hemoglobin. The information allows physicians to know immediately if oxygen levels in the patient's blood are rising or falling.

Prior to the development of pulse oximeters, the only way to measure oxygen saturation was to take a blood sample from an artery and analyze it in a lab. By providing an immediate, noninvasive measure of oxygenation, pulse oximeters revolutionized anesthesia and other medical procedures.

Nieuwe modeziekte: hoog sensitiviteit

'Mind-reading' car keeps drivers focused

NewScientist.com news service, Jan. 18, 2008
Technical University of Berlin researchers found they could speed up drivers' reaction times by as much as 100 milliseconds in real driving conditions by monitoring their EEG signals and reducing distractions during periods of high brain activity.
A "smart" dashboard that reduces the amount of information displayed to drivers during stressful periods on the road could be available in five years, they claim.

The machine is us/ing us

"Web 2.0" in just under 5 minutes. Michael Wesch was inspired to make this video while writing a paper about web 2.0. Struggling to find a way to put it into words, he decided to make this video to show it rather than tell it.

a la Mobile demonstreert Android Platform op HTC Qtek 9090 Smartphone

Inleiding:

Google to Host Terabytes of Open-Source Science Data

Sources at Google have disclosed that the humble domain, http://research.google.com, will soon provide a home for terabytes of open-source scientific datasets. The storage will be free to scientists and access to the data will be free for all.
The project, known as Palimpses missed its original launch date this week, but will debut soon.

Building on the company's acquisition of the data visualization technology, Trendalyzer, from the oft-lauded, TED presenting Gapminder team, Google will also be offering algorithms for the examination and probing of the information. The new site will have YouTube-style annotating and commenting features.

The storage would fill a major need for scientists who want to openly share their data, and would allow citizen scientists access to an unprecedented amount of data to explore. For example, two planned datasets are all 120 terabytes of Hubble Space Telescope data and the images from the Archimedes Palimpsest, the 10th century manuscript that inspired the Google dataset storage project.

http://www.brabantsdagblad.nl/gezondheid/2500299/Filantroop-brengt-rivierblindheid-tot-staan.ece) .

Researchers Control Robot With Brain Signals

Scientists in Japan have succeeded in controlling a humanoid robot with signals picked up in the U.S. from a monkey's brain and transmitted across the Internet, they said Tuesday.
The research, which represents a world's first according to the Japan Science and Technology Agency (JST), could be a first step toward giving doctors the ability to restore motor functions in severely paralyzed patients. It can also contribute to the development of robots that move more like humans, JST said in a statement Tuesday.
In the tests, scientists led by Miguel Nicolelis at Duke University in North Carolina trained two monkeys to walk on their legs on a treadmill. The activity of neurons in the leg area of the monkey's brain was recorded while the monkey walked and decoded into predictions of the position of their leg joints.
These predictions were then sent across the Internet to Kyoto where they were used to control a robot. A live video signal of the robot was relayed back to the monkey to provide feedback.
The robot, called CBi for Computational Brain interface, is about the same size as a human at 155 centimeters tall and weighs 85 kilograms. It has 51 degrees of freedom of motion and was developed by JST and Christopher Atkeson of Carnegie Mellon University's Robotics Institute to enable such neuroscience research. The hardware side of the robot was developed by Sarcos, a Salt Lake City robotics company.
The results of the work are groundbreaking, according to JST, although much remains to be done before it can be worked into something useful. As part of the ongoing research, the teams are looking at sending back more complex feedback to the brains of the monkeys.
In recent years, robotics researchers have been increasingly studying how to make the movements of robots more lifelike. Robots like Asimo, developed by car-maker Honda, are being positioned as future companion robots that could either work alongside humans or carry out tasks for them. One of the many issues that needs to be tackled before such a dream can be realized is increasing the mechanical complexity of the robot while simultaneously developing more advanced control systems.

ORGANIC LIGHT-EMITTING DIODES (OLED)

Organic light-emitting diodes is a rather odd name for a new generation of displays. It promises better pictures, lower power consumption and thinner lighter screens - but it also comes at a price.
Current day televisions have come along in leaps and bounds over the last decade and offer a vast array of sizes and specifications.
But there are some problems: the images take longer to fade from the screen, occasionally giving a vaguely blurry feel and the ratio of light to dark areas on the screen - known as the contrast ratio - is not as good as it could be.
OLED on the other hand has manufacturers claiming a contrast ratio of 1,000,000:1 which is astronomical - the colours really are breathtakingly vivid - and the screens fantastically thin.
The image is visible from extreme angles - something else traditional TVs have trouble doing.
Here is the but: the 11 inch Sony screens are $2,500 (£1,300) each and the company is tight-lipped about the price of its bigger screen.
Another OLED player is Samsung which has announced it will be shipping OLEDs soon; there is no doubt that these too are going to be expensive.

Cheap Ethanol from Tires and Trash

Sunday Jan 13, General Motors announced a partnership with Coskate of Warrenville, IL, a new company that claims it can make ethanol from wood chips, grass, and trash--including old tires--for a dollar a gallon. That's significantly less than it costs to make the biofuel from corn grain, which is the source of almost all the ethanol made in the United States.
Coskata executives, who until the announcement had kept the company's existence and technology under wraps, say they have developed a hybrid approach involving both thermochemical and biological processes for making ethanol. Until now, most researchers have focused on developing either thermochemical or biological methods. Coskata says that besides being cheaper than other ethanol production processes under development, its technology uses less energy and water.
GM will give financial, technical, and marketing support to Coskata to help it scale up its process, which so far has been demonstrated only at the lab scale. Coskata is completing a pilot-scale ethanol production facility and will announce locations for a 40,000-gallon-per-year facility and a 100-million-gallon-per-year commercial-scale plant later this year.

Eight business technology trends to watch

McKinsey heeft een interessant artikel geschreven.

A number of new and emerging technologies, many aimed at enhancing the way the internet is used, promise to change how companies innovate, managers make decisions, and business lower costs, tap talent, or realize new business opportunities.

Technology alone is rarely the key to unlock economic value: companies create real wealth when they combine technology with new ways of doing business.
Through our work and research, we have identified eight technology-enabled trends that will help shape businesses and the economy in the comming years. These trends fall within three broad areas of business activity: managing relationships, managing capital and assets, and leveraging information in new ways.

INHOUD
Managing relationships
1. Distributing cocreation
2. Using consumers as innovators
3. Tapping in a world of talent
4. Extracting more value from interactions
Managing capital and assets
5. Expanding the frontiers of automation
6. Unbundeling production from delivery
Leveraging information in new ways
7. Putting more science into management
8. Making businesses from information

BUG (the Lego of gadgets)

The Bug Labs platform starts with a minicomputer, the Bug Base, onto which you can snap multiple modules, such as a digital camera or an LCD screen.
You can then program your own software to run your custom gadget or download software others have written.
Need a GPS-enabled digital camera that will automatically upload your images to Flickr?
With the Bug Labs platform, you can build one.

The Bug Platform is totally open source, highly configurable, and designed to go wherever consumers' imaginations take them. Plus, the company has a unique "early adopter" pricing scheme, in which the price is lower during the first 60 days; this is a great way to encourage people to start developing software to share.

WESTERN TECHNOLOGY COMPANIES SHOWCASE THEIR PRODUCTS AT THE 2008 INTERNATIONAL CES.
Nearly 900 technology companies from the Western region of the United States will showcase their latest consumer electronics products at the 2008 International CES - the world’s largest consumer technology tradeshow. Together, these exhibitors make the western U.S. the most represented domestic region at CES and cover more than 30 consumer technology categories, including emerging technologies, gaming hardware and software and digital imaging.

Testosteron baat oudere mannen deels.

04/01/08 Smartbox (Artikel RFID Journal)

DHL to Market RFID-enabled Smart Box
Developed in conjunction with the Fraunhofer Institute for Factory Operation and Automation, the system can identify the box's cargo and location, as well as monitor internal environmental conditions.
By Rhea Wessel Jan. 4, 2007—The Fraunhofer Institute for Factory Operation and Automation (IFF) has developed an intelligent container that records which RFID-tagged items are put in or taken out of it, and can be tracked throughout a logistics chain with location-sensing technology.
The Smart Box combines RFID, GSM, sensors and locating technologies with custom-designed software designed to pull all these elements together. The company is exhibiting it at the DHL Innovation Center, where visitors can test it by adding and removing objects, then track the box's location as it moves around the showroom. The system makes up an important part of DPWN's RFID strategy for transporting high-value goods.
RFID antennas are built into the box's walls and lid, with the remaining electronics—an RFID interrogator that can read 13.56 MHz passive tags conforming to the ISO 15693 standard; a CPU; sensors; a GPS receiver; and a GSM mobile phone unit—installed in its base. The current Smart Box prototype, made of plastic, is about 1.20 meters long by 80 centimeters wide by 80 centimeters deep (47 inches by 31 inches by 31 inches), but the technology can also be used either in containers that are bigger or much smaller. The reader and antennas can detect when RFID-tagged items are put in or taken out of the container. Sensors measure such factors as temperature, pressure, shock and humidity, while the GPS receiver calculates the box's location. The GSM mobile phone unit can place an automatic call to a central oversight agency if commanded to do so by the CPU in certain situations, such as when the box is opened unexpectedly or the temperature inside moves beyond set parameters.
IFF has developed the software installed in the box's CPU and on a PC at the central oversight agency. The software utilizes information collected via GPS, RFID and sensors to create charts for monitoring conditions within the box, or for showing the box's position on digital maps. All of this information can be shown on a small LCD display attached to the box's exterior, or on a screen at the central control station.
