Philips 3D – the next revolution in TV viewing

We live in a 3D world, but our television screens still display a flat, 2D image. Now, with Philips’ 3D WOWvx displays, viewers can experience 3D television without the use of special glasses. By adding depth to the picture, these 3D displays give an astonishing, immersive viewing experience, as the images seem to come out of the screen.
At Philips Research, we are passionately involved in making this experience even more worthwhile. In the long history of television, many new ‘dimensions’ have been added to the viewing experience. Black-and-white was replaced by color, mono sound was superseded by stereo and – later on – surround sound, and with AmbiLight, Philips created an even more immersive viewing experience. However, despite all these new ‘dimensions’, we are still looking at a flat, 2D image on a screen.
Now, with our Philips 3D displays, you can experience 3D television without the use of special glasses.
From 2D to 3D television – the roadmapAt present, our 3D displays – that can easily switch between 2D and 3D mode – are used for professional applications, such as in-store advertising, where 3D certainly adds a ‘wow!’ factor. At Philips Research, we are exploring opportunities to bring 3D TV also into the broader consumer domain over the years to come. The availability of 3D content is of key importance. Therefore, we are developing tools for automated conversion of 2D content into 3D, and for dedicated creation of 3D content. Furthermore, we are partnering with industrial and academic players in a European consortium to further develop a broadcast format for 3D television.
All in all, the basic requirements are being met to bring a new, exciting viewing experience to mass consumer markets. 3D is here now and may soon revolutionize TV viewing in the home.
